Louise Gibbs is a Vocal Tutor (Jazz) at the University of Sheffield’s School of Languages, Arts and Societies, part of the Modern Language Teaching Centre. She holds an MA and MEd from Columbia University and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Her roles include adjunct teaching at Leeds, Chester, and York Universities, and she serves as a specialist external examiner for the Royal Northern College of Music’s Popular Music programme. She has taught at UK conservatoires and universities, previously leading the Jazz and Postgraduate Programmes at Leeds College of Music (2007–2011).
Her research focuses on vocal pedagogy, improvisation, and jazz aesthetics, with a past presidency of the British Voice Association (2021–2022). She actively performs and composes, releasing acclaimed albums such as Seven Deadly Sings (2014), and collaborates with top musicians across the UK and US. Recent performances include a 2024 gig at Chesterfield Jazz with Wendy Kirkland and appearances at venues like Ronnie Scott’s in London.
Louise’s career balances education, performance, and research, with notable contributions to jazz vocal technique, jazz history, and contemporary repertoire development. She frequently organizes workshops and lectures on jazz improvisation, vocal aesthetics, and pedagogical approaches.
