Dr. Louise Gascoine is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Durham University, with affiliations to the Durham University Evidence Centre for Education and the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development. Her research focuses on metacognition, mental health in education, and the intersection of educational and psychotherapeutic practices. She holds a UKCP registration as a Psychotherapist and integrates psychotherapeutic concepts into her academic work.
Her research includes evaluating interventions like ReflectED, a metacognition-focused whole-school program, and leading systematic reviews on educational interventions. She has contributed to the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), co-investigating large-scale evaluations. Her expertise spans systematic reviewing and qualitative evidence synthesis, reflected in her role as an Associate Editor for the Campbell Education Co-ordinating Group.
Prior to academia, Gascoine was a secondary school Geography teacher and later a Research Fellow at the University of York and Durham University. She earned her M.Ed part-time and a Durham Doctoral Studentship-funded PhD (2016) on developmental metacognition in students aged 4–16.
Her work emphasizes student perspectives and innovative data analysis methods, such as using word clouds and cartoon storyboards to explore learning experiences. She has examined PhD theses at Newcastle University and the University of York and reviews for journals like Review of Education and Systematic Reviews.
Gascoine’s research also addresses the experiences of adults with disabled siblings in education and counseling, blending educational and clinical insights. She advises students and collaborates on projects like the Teaching and Learning Toolkit to bridge research and policy.
