Louise Frey is a PhD candidate, lecturer, and research assistant at the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Bern, with additional affiliation at the Prison Research Group (Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology).
Her educational background includes:
- Master's degree in Social Anthropology and Sociology from University of Bern (Summa cum Laude)
- Exchange study at Humboldt University Berlin
Her research specializes in state anthropology and legal systems, focusing on criminal law frameworks, imprisonment practices, and political discourses shaping penal alternatives. Her doctoral work «Cultivating (the lack) of alternatives to prison?» ethnographically examines how non-carceral solutions are negotiated in German-speaking Switzerland, while her Master's thesis analyzed prison directors' discretionary powers through fieldwork in Swiss correctional facilities.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Faculty Prize of the Faculty of Humanities (University of Bern) for Master's thesis excellence
