Louis van der Ham serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Twente's Faculty of Science and Technology, where he leads research and education within the Sustainable Process Technology group.
His academic credentials include:
- Chemistry studies at HTS
- Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Twente (Cum Laude, January 1986)
- PhD research on regenerative high-temperature desulfurization of coal gas in circulating fluidized beds (completed January 1991)
Dr. van der Ham's research spans advanced separation technologies and process engineering, with particular expertise in metal separation using ionic liquids, supercritical water desalination systems, and reactive distillation methodologies. His work integrates industrial feasibility analysis with sustainable process design, emphasizing practical applications in resource recovery and clean water technologies.
He directs the 15 EC Process Plant Design course where student teams develop full-scale industrial processes from literature-based research, frequently collaborating with industry partners on real-world engineering challenges.
Administratively, he has served as program coordinator for Chemical Engineering Bachelor and Master programs since 2008 and co-manages the PD-Eng program's process plant design project.
