Louis de Carbonnières

Louis de Carbonnières is a Professor of History of Law and Institutions at the Faculty of Legal, Political and Social Sciences, University of Lille. He serves as Director of the Lille Institute of Judicial Studies (IEJ Lille) and oversees the Law degree in International and European Law and the Master's in History of Law and Institutions.

His research centers on the history of legal institutions, with a focus on parliaments and sovereign courts in France and Europe from the medieval to early modern periods. Key themes include judicial procedure, the role of judges, legal humanism, punishment, and the interplay between law and political authority.

His recent publications reflect a strong engagement with interdisciplinary and transnational perspectives, particularly through Franco-Italian collaborations on law, digital innovation, and environmental issues. The body of his work demonstrates sustained scholarly output across monographs, edited volumes, and conference organization.

Louis de Carbonnières has supervised several doctoral students, including Laury Renard, Raphaël Dorvillé, and Marc Thérage, often in co-direction. He has participated in numerous research projects and colloquia, frequently in partnership with institutions such as Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, University of Trento, and CNRS. He is active in research networks including IHRIM, IRJS, and ERMES.

He leads the Lille Institute of Judicial Studies and is involved in multiple academic programs and doctoral training initiatives. His leadership extends to organizing scientific events and contributing to editorial projects in legal history.
