Louis Lambrechts serves as Research Director and Unit Head at the Department of Virology, Institut Pasteur, Paris, and Deputy Director of CNRS UMR2000 Evolutionary Genomics, Modeling & Health. His laboratory investigates the ecology, evolution, and genetics of insect-virus interactions with primary focus on arthropod-borne virus transmission by mosquitoes. Previously, he held positions as Research Scientist and Junior Group Leader at Institut Pasteur (2013-2019) following postdoctoral work supported by prestigious fellowships including the Marie Curie Outgoing International Fellowship.
Dr. Lambrechts' research program addresses fundamental questions about variation in mosquito vector competence using genomics, quantitative genetics, and evolutionary ecology approaches. His work primarily focuses on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and their transmission of dengue and Zika viruses. Key research areas include endogenous viral elements, cytochrome P450 interactions with arboviruses, thermal adaptation effects on vector competence, and the role of mosquito microbiota in disease transmission. His laboratory emphasizes experimental approaches that account for natural system complexity where genetically diverse mosquito populations interact with viruses in variable environments.
Recent publications reveal critical insights into dengue virus susceptibility linked to cytochrome P450 variants, thermal adaptation effects on vector competence, and mechanisms behind Zika virus strain differences in transmission efficiency. His team's work demonstrates how specific mosquito genetic variants influence arbovirus transmission dynamics across different geographical populations.

Dr. Lambrechts actively supervises research personnel and has mentored 11 postdocs, 6 PhD students, and 10 master's students. His laboratory receives funding from multiple sources including ANR projects (LIPOARBO-IVI, PILGRIM, BAKOUMBA), European consortia (ZikaPLAN, DENFREE), and foundation grants. The lab maintains strong international collaborations across Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Americas for field studies on arbovirus transmission dynamics. Dr. Lambrechts serves as Academic Editor for PLoS Biology and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases while conducting extensive science outreach through media interviews and public engagement activities.
