Louis Chauvel is a Full Professor of Sociology at the University of Luxembourg, part of the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. He holds the FNR Luxembourg PEARL Chair and leads the Institute for Research on Socio-Economic Inequality (IRSEI). Previously, he was a Full Professor at Sciences Po (2005–2012) and an Honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France (2003).
His research focuses on social inequalities, public policies, social stratification, and advanced methodologies for population studies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Lille (1997) and his Habilitation from Sciences Po Paris (2003). Notable roles include former General Secretary of the European Sociological Association (2005–2007) and former Treasurer of the French Sociological Association (AFS, 2002–2006).
Chauvel’s work emphasizes generational cohort analysis, wealth distribution, and the impacts of socio-economic changes on health and education. Key publications include Les Classes moyennes à la dérive (2006) and studies on global inequality dynamics. His methodology contributions, such as the Isograph tool, enhance comparative distributional analysis.
He has held visiting positions at Columbia University (2011–2012) and Berkeley (2000). Awards include the IUF Honorary Membership. His interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, economics, and public health, addressing urgent societal challenges like middle-class erosion and intergenerational mobility.
