Lotta Vikström is a Professor at Umeå University's Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies and holds a dual affiliation with the Centre for Demographic and Aging Research (CEDAR). She leads cross-disciplinary disability research projects funded by the Wallenberg Foundation and the European Research Council (ERC). Her work focuses on how disabilities intersect with ageing, health, and social structures in Swedish society over time.
Her academic qualifications include a Docent title and extensive expertise in historical demography, combining parish register data with other sources to analyze life courses, migration, and social mobility. Key research themes include disability and partnership dynamics, inbreeding health outcomes, and the historical development of welfare systems.
Recent publications highlight her work on disability disadvantages in partnerships, long-term health impacts of inbreeding, and stakeholder views on workforce inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. She has received prestigious grants including the Wallenberg Scholar Grant (2020-2030) and an ERC Consolidator Grant (2016-2021).
Vikström supervises PhD students and has held administrative roles, including Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Arts (2011-2015) and currently serving as major professor for the History subject. She collaborates in research groups such as the Umeå Center for Disability Research and leads projects like DISTIME (2020-2030) examining disabilities across historical and contemporary contexts.
