Lotta Uusitalo serves as a Senior University Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Helsinki, where she supervises doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Programmes for Cognition, Learning, Instruction and Communication and School, Education, Society, and Culture. Her work centers on transforming educational practices through strengths-based frameworks and inclusive methodologies.
Her research critically examines Special Educational Needs (SEN) through lenses of inclusive education and positive psychology. She pioneers shifts from deficit-focused models to resilience-building approaches, emphasizing how social relationships foster existential security in children. Current projects explore three-tier support systems in primary schools, cross-cultural teacher development, and character-strengths interventions.
Recent publications reveal a decisive trend toward integrating existential resilience with inclusive pedagogy, particularly through international collaborations in Southeast Asia. Her 2024-2025 outputs include practical tools like strength calendars and analyses of systemic educational strengths.
Uusitalo's accolades include:
- EIB SIT2019 (2019)
- Helsinki Challenge -kilpailu (2017)
- Sitra Ratkaisu100 (2017)
She actively mentors doctoral researchers like Piialiina Helminen while leading major funded initiatives, including the INCO project (2023-2025) developing co-teaching frameworks between Finnish and Southeast Asian institutions. Her grant portfolio spans strengths-based interventions, inclusive teacher training, and virtual school development.
Uusitalo collaborates globally through the Helsinki SEN research community, notably with Cempaka International School Malaysia, and contributes to national educational policy through projects like Tuetaan yhdessä (Support Together).
