Lorrie Cranor is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). She serves as Director of the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS) and co-director of the MSIT-Privacy Engineering masters program. Her roles include FORE Systems University Professor in the School of Computer Science and College of Engineering, and Bosch Distinguished Professor in Security and Privacy Technologies at CyLab. She previously served as Chief Technologist at the US Federal Trade Commission (2016) and co-founded Wombat Security Technologies.
Research focuses on usable privacy and security, technology policy, and human-computer interaction. Notable projects include the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory (CUPS), Privacy Illustrated, and studies on passwords, privacy decision-making, and user-controllable security. Awards include ACM and IEEE Fellowships, and recognition as a Top 100 Innovator under 35 (Technology Review).
Teaching includes courses on usable privacy and security, privacy policy, and societal computing. Advises PhD students in Societal Computing, Engineering and Public Policy, and Computer Science. Affiliations span multiple departments at CMU, including the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and Heinz College.
Personal interests include quilting, sewing, and advocating for privacy through creative projects like the 'password dress' and fiber arts. Served as a Fellow in the Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, blending art and technology.
