Lorraine Weatherspoon

Lorraine Weatherspoon is Professor and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Michigan State University's College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. She actively participates in the Graduate Committee and Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee.

• PhD in Nutrition from Pennsylvania State University (1992)
• MS in Nutrition from West Virginia University (1987)

Her research focuses on dietary, lifestyle and ecological factors driving diet-related health disparities and chronic diseases. Special areas include Type 2 diabetes prevention, maternal and child nutrition, and HIV/AIDS nutrition interventions. Recent work examines:

• Acculturation impacts on Asian Indian dietary patterns
• Breastfeeding outcomes among African American women
• Food security implications in Rwandan agricultural policy
• Nutrition gaps in low-income childcare settings

She contributes to undergraduate education through courses:

Active in community health initiatives, including a $100k project to improve maternal nutrition in Uganda.
