Lorraine Walsh is a Professor of Practice in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University and serves as Art Director and Curator of The Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. Her work bridges Art and Science, focusing on Digital/New Media Art, Drawing, and Fine Art Animation. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.F.A. from Parsons The New School for Design.
Research & Professional Background: Walsh's research explores the intersection of art, science, and nature, with a focus on interdisciplinary processes. She has exhibited globally, including at the State Museum of Contemporary Art (Thessaloniki), Museum Ludwig (Cologne), and the José Martí National Library (Havana). Her awards include NSF grants and the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship.
Academic Roles: She previously held positions such as Chair and Associate Professor of New Media at the University of North Carolina Asheville, and taught at Pratt Institute and Rutgers University’s Brodsky Center. Her pedagogical contributions include developing new curricula in New Media Art.
Publications & Media: Her work and writings appear in The New York Times, Leonardo Journal, MIT Press, and SciArt Magazine. She has also led collaborative projects like the e-MobiLArt Euro grant for interactive media installations.
