Dr Lorraine M Work is a Reader in Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow. She holds appointments in the Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Science, School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health (SCMH). Her career spans roles from postdoctoral researcher (2000) to Senior Lecturer (2015), culminating in her Reader promotion (2019). Dr Work’s research focuses on stroke pathophysiology, targeting pathways such as mitochondrial function, extracellular vesicles, and oedema-neuronal plasticity interactions. She leads preclinical studies integrating gene-based therapies and microRNA strategies for neuroprotection.
- Education: BSc (Hons) Immunology & Pharmacology (University of Strathclyde, 1995); PhD in Vascular Injury Therapy (1999)
- Professional Roles: Athena Swan Champion, MVLS EDI committee member, co-director of BHF PhD program
Her research group explores novel therapeutics for ischemic stroke, leveraging extracellular vesicles as delivery systems and investigating mitochondrial dysfunction’s role in recovery. Collaborations with clinical teams ensure translational impact. Public engagement includes “Build-a-Brain” workshops and Pint of Science talks, recognized by ICCA Awards.
Key achievements include BHF Intermediate Fellowship (2006-2008), Research Culture Award (2021), and MVLS Engagement recognition (2022). Grants span £1.2M+ across topics like exosome-mediated therapy and stroke outcome measures.
