Lorraine K. Tyler is an MRC Research Professor at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Centre for Speech, Language and the Brain, an interdisciplinary research group investigating language systems. She previously held roles at Birkbeck College (Professor of Psychology, 1990-1998), University of Cambridge (University Lecturer, 1985-1990), and institutions in the Netherlands.
- Education: PhD in Cognitive Psychology (1977) from the University of Chicago, USA, and BA in Psychology (1963-1966) from the University of Leicester.
Research interests focus on cognitive neuroscience, language processing, neural mechanisms of language disorders (aphasia), and neurosemantics. Her work bridges functional and neural accounts of language systems through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Honours include:
- Fellow of the British Academy (1995)
- Professorial Fellow at Clare College, Cambridge (2000)
- Fellow of the Neuropsychology Symposium (2004)
- Fellow of Academia Europaea (2005)
- Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (2009)
Grants and leadership encompass £1.5M MRC Programme Grant (2000-06), £5.24M BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger Grant (2010-15), and European Research Council Advanced Investigator Grant (2010-15). She has chaired committees at the University of Cambridge, including the Faculty Board of Biology Promotions Committee, and contributed to national/international grant reviews and editorial boards.
Labs and teams: She leads the Centre for Speech, Language and the Brain, comprising 14 members (postdocs, graduate students, RAs, technical staff) funded by her grants.
