Lorine Hughes is a Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Colorado Denver's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She earned her PhD in Sociology from Washington State University in 2003 and maintains an active research profile in criminology and sociological theory.
Her research expertise spans street gangs, criminological theory, violence, quantitative methods, and social network analysis. Professor Hughes investigates crime and delinquency through spatial and social network lenses, with particular focus on neighborhood processes and their relationship to criminal behavior. Her methodological strengths in quantitative analysis inform her examination of complex social phenomena related to criminal justice.
Her recent publications in Criminal Justice and Behavior and British Journal of Criminology demonstrate her ongoing contribution to understanding neighborhood surveillance effects on crime and the relationship between war exposure and interpersonal violence in European contexts. These works reflect her dual interest in micro-level neighborhood dynamics and macro-level societal conflicts.
Professor Hughes serves as Co-Editor of the Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, positioning her at the forefront of scholarly discourse in her field. She has taught a comprehensive range of courses including introduction to sociology, social problems, gang patterns and policies, criminological theory, corrections, race crime and justice, crime analysis, and statistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. and M.A. from Washington State University and a B.S. from Oregon State University, establishing a strong foundation for her interdisciplinary approach to sociological and criminological research.
