Dr. Loriene Roy is a Professor at the School of Information, The University of Texas at Austin, where she focuses on indigenous cultural heritage development and information literacy. Her work bridges service learning and public library innovation, particularly in job seeker support and literacy initiatives for Native American youth. She teaches graduate courses such as Library Instruction and Information Literacy and Information in Social and Cultural Context.
- Education: A.S. and B.T. in Allied Health/ Medical Radiologic Technology (Oregon Institute of Technology, 1977), M.L.S. (University of Arizona, 1980), Ph.D. in Library and Information Science (University of Illinois, Urbana, 1987).
- Professional Leadership: Past President of the American Indian Library Association (1997-1998) and the American Library Association (2007-2008), Convener of IFLA’s Special Interest Group on Indigenous Matters (2008-2013), and Trustee Emeritus of the LeRoy C. Merritt Humanitarian Fund.
Her research interests emphasize indigenous knowledge systems, service learning for LIS students, and global library practices. She founded and directs If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything, a national reading club for American Indian students, and has authored over 500 presentations and publications on these themes. Her awards highlight her contributions to equity, leadership, and education, including the ALA Equality Award (2006) and Library Journal Mover & Shaker (2007). She also established a Student Support Fund to aid master’s students in attending professional conferences.
