Dr. Lori Medders serves as the Joseph F. Freeman Distinguished Professor of Insurance and Department Chair for the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance at Appalachian State University's Walker College. She joined ASU in 2017 after faculty positions at Florida State University (2009-2017), Georgia State University (1998-2008), and Georgia Southern University (1994-1998). Her professional leadership spans academia and industry through roles as Board Member and Education Committee Chair of the American Association of Water Distribution and Management (AAWD&M), Chair of the Risk & Insurance Teaching Society (ARIA), and former Chair of Florida's Hurricane Loss Methodology Commission.
Her research spans risk capital access, catastrophe finance, climate change impacts on (re)insurance, economic resilience, and decision psychology under uncertainty. Recent publications (2021-2023) reveal a strategic focus on emerging risk domains: water infrastructure challenges (capacity, quality, affordability), flood insurance regulation, pandemic risk securitization, and gender rating ethics in auto insurance. This work demonstrates her commitment to translating complex risk concepts into practical frameworks for industry and policy applications.
With 30 years of risk consulting experience and 80+ industry speaking engagements, Dr. Medders bridges theoretical and applied risk management. She teaches Commercial Insurance, Insurance Operations, Risky Decisions, and Enterprise Risk Management courses while leading the department's strategic direction. Her collaborative initiatives – notably the AAWD&M water risk certification program – exemplify her approach to creating industry-relevant educational pathways that address critical infrastructure vulnerabilities through interdisciplinary risk solutions.
