Lori Hoy is a Post Graduate Researcher (PGR) at the University of Surrey's School of Hospitality and Tourism Management within the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the role of companion animals in leisure, hospitality, and tourism, particularly examining how dog guardianship influences consumer decision-making, well-being, and service innovation. She is supervised by Dr. Brigitte Stangl and Professor Nigel Morgan.
Dr. Hoy holds a PhD in Research (in progress), an MSc in Tourism Marketing (University of Surrey, 2013), an MBA in Marketing & Management (University of Miami, 2006), and a BBA in Marketing (University of Iowa, 2001). Prior to academia, she worked in marketing roles across hospitality (e.g., Hilton Worldwide, Occidental Hotels) and other industries for 15+ years.
Her research interests include the socio-behavioral aspects of traveling with companion animals, well-being impacts during crises, and marketing strategies for dog-friendly services. Recent work highlights the importance of shared outdoor spaces for dog guardians and explores decision-making processes using platforms like specialty OTAs.
Publications emphasize empirical analyses of leisure space utilization, cognitive-experiential decision-making frameworks, and the dual role of companion animals in stress mitigation. Findings inform stakeholders on designing inclusive leisure environments and communication strategies post-pandemic.
Lori is affiliated with the International Society for Anthrozoology, Society for Companion Animal Studies, and Institute of Directors. She volunteers with Blue Cross and contributes to the Centre for Sustainability and Wellbeing in the Visitor Economy.
