Lori Goldner is a Professor, Graduate Program Director, and Associate Head in the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, part of the College of Natural Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1991) and an A.B. from Cornell University (1984). Before joining UMass in 2008, she worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for 17 years. Her research focuses on single molecule biophysics, including studies of RNA interactions, cellulose synthesis, and nanodroplet-based techniques for molecular analysis. She has been awarded grants from NSF and NIST and has served on panels for NSF, DOE, and NIH. Goldner is actively involved in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics and advocates for clean energy transitions, serving on the Amherst Energy and Climate Action Committee and the UMass Energy Transition Institute. She teaches a course on fossil fuel replacement and blogs about political and advocacy interests. Her lab’s work combines experimental physics with interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing optical techniques and superresolution microscopy.
