Professor Lorenzo Stanghellini is a Full Professor of Business Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Florence, where he has taught since 2002. He is also a practicing lawyer in Florence and holds an LL.M. from Columbia University (1995). His academic career includes visiting research positions at Cambridge, Oxford, Columbia, UC Berkeley, and Stanford Universities.
He serves as principal investigator for the EU-funded CODIRE project (2016–2018), focusing on contractualised distress resolution. His expertise spans legislative reforms in insolvency and banking law at national and EU levels, including advising the Bank of Italy and the Italian Government on the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (2014/59/UE) and contributing to Italy's 2006 insolvency law reform.
Prof. Stanghellini actively engages with institutions like the European Commission, the EU Court of Justice, and CONSOB. He is a member of the International Insolvency Institute and the Thematic Working Group on 'Law and the Economy – Insolvency and Creditor/Debtor Regimes' under the World Bank's Global Forum on Law, Justice and Development. He also serves on the executive board of the Italian Association of Business Law Professors 'Orizzonti del diritto commerciale'.
His recent advisory roles include participation in the European Commission’s Expert Group drafting a harmonized EU directive on restructuring and insolvency law, expected in late 2019.
