معرفی
Lorenzo Bonaguro is a Group Leader in Molecular and Translational Immunomics at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn, with a dual appointment at the University Clinic Bonn (UKB). His research integrates systems biology approaches with advanced computational methods to understand immune system aging and its relationship to environmental factors.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biomedicine from the University of Bonn (2020), with dissertation "Creld1 controls T cell homeostasis in mouse and human" (summa cum laude)
- M.S. in Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies from the University of Padova
- B.S. in Health Biotechnologies from the University of Padova
Bonaguro's research focuses on understanding how environmental factors such as diet and pollution influence immune system aging and vaccine response. His team employs single-cell RNA sequencing, tonsil organoids, and artificial intelligence to unravel the molecular determinants of immune fitness. The ultimate goal of his work is to develop precision medicine strategies that enable tailored treatments for individual patients, leading to more effective and personalized healthcare approaches.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with several prestigious awards:
- Renate und Karlheinz Schmidt-Stiftung Award (Early Academic Award, 2023)
- Best publication award from Bonner Forum Biomedicine (2020)
- Best poster award from Bonner Forum Biomedicine (2018)
Bonaguro has secured significant third-party funding for his research, including an ERC Starting Grant (POLIS) for 2025-2030 to investigate the chronic impact of PFAS on the adaptive immune system, ImmunoSensation2 funding (2023-2025), and DFG funding for the ImmuDiet project (2023-2026). He has developed computational tools including cyCONDOR for high dimensionality flow cytometry analysis, Clinical Match for avoiding sample preparation batch effects in omics data, and huva for human variation analysis.
He leads the Bonaguro Lab which combines biological expertise with advanced technological approaches to address critical scientific questions in immunology. His scholarly impact is reflected in a citation count of 4013, an h-index of 15, and an i10-index of 17.
