Lorena Mihok

Lorena Mihok is a Teaching Professor of Liberal Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) since 2022. She holds a Ph.D. in applied anthropology from the University of South Florida, an M.A. in Latin American and Latino studies, and a B.A. in art history from Columbia University. Her academic career includes roles as Visiting Assistant Professor, Adjunct Instructor, and Graduate Teaching Assistant across multiple institutions, including Eckerd College, University of Arizona Global Campus, and the University of Tampa.

Her research focuses on colonial Latin America, particularly the intersection of British colonialism with Indigenous Miskitu communities on Roatán Island, Honduras. She employs historical archaeology, ethnohistorical analysis, and material culture studies to explore themes such as royalization processes, labor dynamics, and geoarchaeological landscapes. Additional interests include ancient Maya perceptions of land and environmental symbolism.

Her publications and presentations span topics like 18th-century military outposts, colonial material culture, and Indigenous-European interactions. Notable awards include the ISLAC Research Travel Grant (2010) and a fellowship from the University of South Florida (2002–2003).

Mihok has also held non-academic roles in museum education, including Assistant Curator of Education at the Norton Museum of Art and volunteer coordination at the Orlando Museum of Art. She maintains active engagement with archaeological fieldwork, including the Proyecto Roatán excavations.
