She is a member of the Research Group "Centro de Estudios Internacionales y Europeos del Área del Estrecho" (SEJ 572) of the Andalusian Research Plan, directed by Dr. Alejandro del Valle Gálvez.
Dr. Calvo Mariscal earned her PhD in Law from the University of Cádiz with the thesis "Immigration, Externalization of Migration Controls and Human Rights: The Case of Libya and the International Responsibility of the European Union" (2023), supervised by Dr. José Alejandro del Valle Gálvez and Dr. Inmaculada González García. She completed research stays at the Leiden Law Faculty – Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and the Peace Palace Library in The Hague. She holds two Master's degrees: a Master's Degree in Law from the University of Cádiz (2017) and a Master's Degree in International and European Studies from the University of Granada (2019).
Her research focuses on Public International Law, European Union Law, and International Human Rights Law, with particular emphasis on migration and border issues. Dr. Calvo Mariscal's work systematically examines the externalization of EU border controls, cooperation with third countries on migration management, and the implications for human rights. Her publications address critical topics including EU-Libya cooperation on migration, the management of migration flows at Europe's southern borders, and the protection of migrants' rights under international law. Her research reveals how European migration policies increasingly rely on third country cooperation, often with significant human rights implications that challenge international legal obligations.
Dr. Calvo Mariscal serves as a lecturer in the Official Bilingual Master's Degree in International Relations and Migration at the University of Cádiz, teaching subjects related to Public International Law, European Union Law, Migration and Borders, Asylum and Refugee Law, and International Human Rights Law. She has been involved in several European research projects, including the PROTECT project focusing on vulnerability in migration governance and the SEA-UE (Universities of the Seas) alliance, which includes institutions from Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Croatia, and Malta.
