Lorena Arranz is an Associate Professor at the University of Oslo (UiO), holding roles as Group Leader and Deputy Centre Director at the Centre for Embryology and Healthy Development (CRESCO) within the Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Clinical Medicine. She also serves as a Research Professor at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Her research focuses on stem cell biology, ageing, cancer, and inflammation, particularly investigating the hematopoietic stem cell niche and myeloproliferative disorders. Arranz has held international visiting and guest group leader positions at institutions including the University of Birmingham (UK), Aarhus University (Denmark), and New York University (USA).
Her academic background includes a PhD from Madrid Complutense University (Spain) and postdoctoral research at the CNIC in Spain. She has extensive experience in studying the interplay between stem cells, their niches, and disease progression in conditions like acute myeloid leukemia. Her work highlights novel therapeutic targets, such as IL-1β and bone marrow adipocytes, while exploring metabolic and immunological mechanisms underlying haematopoietic disorders.
Research interests prominently feature stem cell dynamics, age-related changes in hematopoiesis, and the role of inflammation in cancer. Recent studies investigate sympathetic neuropathy in bone marrow and metabolic rewiring in stromal cells. Her publications span journals like Nature Communications, eLife, and Experimental Hematology & Oncology, reflecting contributions to understanding malignant and healthy myeloproliferation.
Arranz collaborates across institutions, including the University Hospital of North Norway and the Norwegian Center for Molecular Medicine (NCMM). She has led projects on estrogen signaling’s role in leukemia and pioneered methods to target leukemia stem cells. Her lab’s work bridges basic science and translational medicine, aiming to improve therapies for hematological malignancies.
