Lois Weisman serves as the Sarah Winans Newman Collegiate Professor in the Life Sciences, Research Professor at the University of Michigan Life Science Institute, and Professor in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her laboratory operates within the Life Sciences Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she leads research bridging fundamental cellular mechanisms with disease pathology.
Dr. Weisman earned her A.B. in Chemistry from Rutgers University and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California-Berkeley. Her academic trajectory established her as a leading researcher in cellular processes with direct implications for human disease, particularly through her work on phosphoinositide signaling and organelle transport mechanisms.
Her research program investigates two interconnected areas: the PI3,5P2 signaling pathway's role in neurodegeneration and the mechanisms of myosin V-based organelle transport. Her lab discovered that even minor defects in PI3,5P2 signaling cause profound neurodegeneration, and they're exploring whether therapeutic upregulation of this pathway could mitigate disease. Simultaneously, they study how organelles move to precise locations during cell division and differentiation, with defects in these processes linked to neurological diseases and developmental disorders. The lab employs yeast, cultured neurons, and mammalian cell lines to uncover essential cellular mechanisms using biochemical, genetic, and imaging approaches.
