Prof. Lodi Nauta holds the Chair of History of Philosophy at the University of Groningen. He specializes in the intellectual transitions of Western thought, focusing on the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Early Modern periods. His work bridges historical source analysis with philosophical critique, particularly examining Renaissance humanism's impact on modern thought. Nauta's research emphasizes figures like Lorenzo Valla, exploring their critiques of scholasticism and contributions to linguistic and philosophical innovation.
Education: Studied biology, philosophy, and medieval studies in Groningen and York. PhD (cum laude, 1999) on William of Conches' commentary on Boethius. Served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy (2016–present).
