Liza Y. Barnes, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Management at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business, conducting qualitative research on how employees navigate interpersonal risks to build relationships and advocate for well-being amid power dynamics, medical leaves, mental health challenges, women's health issues, and trauma.
Her research spans work-life balance and conflict, identity management, compassion in organizations, and positive relationships at work, with emphasis on underrepresented and lower-power groups. She employs qualitative methodologies to examine vulnerability and resilience in organizational contexts, contributing to behavioral science and organizational behavior scholarship.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on employee vulnerability through themes like power dynamics in leader-employee relationships (e.g., right-hand partnerships), methodological innovations in team field research, evolving workplace harassment patterns, and career decisions of underrepresented geoscientists, demonstrating consistent contributions to organizational theory and practice.
Scientific recognition includes:
- 2023 AOM MOC Outstanding Reviewer Award (Academy of Management)
Research funding comprises a Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Small Research Grant ($6,250, January 2022). As faculty, she mentors graduate students in management though specific advisees aren't publicly listed. Collaborative engagement includes active participation in the Compassion Lab and Positive Relationships at Work micro-communities advancing positive organizational scholarship.
