Liza Malamut

Liza Malamut serves as Adjunct Lecturer in Music (Historical Trombones) at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music within the Historical Performance Institute. She concurrently holds artistic leadership roles as director of The Newberry Consort and founding member of Incantare.

Education:

• Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance, Eastman School of Music (studied with John Marcellus)
• Master of Music, Boston University (studied with Don Lucas)
• Doctor of Musical Arts in Historical Performance, Boston University (studied with Greg Ingles)

Research Interests: Malamut specializes in historical brass performance practices across Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras, with particular focus on trombone repertoire. Her scholarship bridges historical techniques with modern performance through transcribed etudes and recovery of works by marginalized composers. She actively promotes accessible historically informed performance while examining intersections of music and cultural identity in early modern Europe.

Advising and Grants: Supported by the American Dissertation Completion Fellowship, Malamut has presented nationwide masterclasses and lecture recitals. Her research culminated in a DMA dissertation integrating historical trombone techniques with contemporary pedagogy, featuring 88 transcribed etudes. She co-edited the scholarly volume 'Music and Jewish Culture in Early Modern Italy: New Perspectives' (Indiana University Press).

Ensembles and Performance: Malamut performs internationally with ensembles including Tafelmusik, Boston Camerata, Handel and Haydn Society, and Apollo's Fire. Her recordings appear on Naxos and Hyperion labels, and she has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, and Washington National Cathedral. Through Incantare, she champions repertoire from lesser-known early modern European composers.
