Professor Liz Williamson is an Honorary Professor at the University of Stirling's Faculty of Natural Sciences, with a career spanning over four decades in primate conservation. She has held roles including Director of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund’s Karisoke Research Centre and Chair of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group's Great Apes Section. Her research focuses on the conservation, ecology, and behavior of gorillas and other great apes, particularly mitigating disease transmission risks and tourism impacts. She has authored influential IUCN publications, including ape conservation action plans and best practice guidelines.
Education: PhD student at the University of Stirling (1983), followed by roles as Honorary Research Fellow (1992–2022) and Honorary Professor (2022).
Research Interests: Conservation strategies for great apes, disease ecology in wildlife, and the ecological impacts of extractive industries. She leads global efforts to monitor great ape populations and advises on Red List assessments for bonobos, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans.
Awards: Recipient of the 2022 Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation Award for Excellence in Primate Conservation.
