Dr Liz Thomas is a Professor in the Department of Education at the University of York, specializing in higher education equity, widening access, and student success. As module leader for postgraduate research methods and contributor to the 'Higher Education in the twenty-first century' module, she integrates her expertise into teaching while leading the Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice (CRESJ).
- Research focuses on student engagement, belonging, inclusive pedagogy, and progression to postgraduate study.
- Currently investigates 'Engagement, belonging and success in diverse taught postgraduate programmes' and commuter student experiences.
Her research has informed UK and international higher education policy, including the Teaching Excellence and Student Success (TEF) process and Access and Participation Plans (APP). Recent studies include a comparative nursing student experience analysis in the UK and Norway, with 55 publications including 11 authored or edited books. Her work has contributed to two 4* internationally excellent impact case studies in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 and 2021.
She is available to supervise PhD students focusing on widening participation and student success, with current supervisees examining belonging and persistence. Her leadership roles include Deputy Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Social Sciences, and she actively collaborates on projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
