Livia Schubiger is a Full Professor at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences at ETH Zürich. She previously held faculty positions at the London School of Economics, Duke University, and the University of Oxford before joining ETH in July 2024. Her research focuses on the social and institutional implications of violence and conflict, particularly wartime and gender-based violence. She employs innovative data collection and analysis techniques to study state-led atrocities, attitudes toward force, and activism against violence. Her work bridges multiple analytical levels, from local to international, using diverse methodologies.
Research Interests:
Her primary areas include conflict dynamics, political violence, gender-based violence, and the intersection of data science with human rights. She explores how state violence affects insurgent cohesion and civilian agency, as well as the legacies of resistance in contexts like Mexico. Her work on public attitudes toward the use of force highlights moral and legal imperatives in conflict decision-making.
Her research also leverages novel datasets, such as the Ethnic One-Sided Violence dataset, to analyze conflict patterns and ethnic dimensions of violence.
