Liss Platt

Liss Platt is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia at McMaster University, represented by MKG127 gallery in Toronto. Her interdisciplinary work spans video, film, photography, web-based art, performance, and installations.

Her research interests focus on the complex processes through which individuals become constituted as subjects, examining how representations and discourses shape our understanding of ourselves. She combines personal narrative, critical analysis, and gender politics while challenging assumptions about appropriate art forms and encouraging contemplation of everyday life. Key areas include Visual Art, Digital Media, Performance Art, Installation Art, Documentary, Queer Studies, and Archive Studies.

Her scholarly output includes publications in Canadian Theatre Review and other venues, with work exploring documentary strategies, personal narrative, and visual culture. Her recent publications demonstrate consistent engagement with media theory, cultural studies, and contemporary art practices.

Platt actively contributes to academic life through teaching courses including Time-Based Media, Documentary Strategies, and Senior Thesis Research and Production. She serves as a member of the Hamilton-based queer art collective, Shake-n-Make, connecting her academic work with community-based artistic practice.

Her educational background includes a Whitney Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of Art, BFA from University of Connecticut, and MFA from University of California San Diego, providing a strong foundation for her interdisciplinary approach to media arts and communication studies.
