Lisa Young is a Lecturer in Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the School of Curriculum Teaching & Inclusive Education at Monash University's Faculty of Education. As an early career researcher, she teaches courses including Introduction to Health and Physical Education, Biophysical and Behavioural Foundations of HPE, and Inclusion and Diversity in HPE.
Her research focuses on HPE, sport and physical activity contexts where she examines curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment through the lens of equity, inclusion, and transformative teaching practices. She is particularly interested in how HPE can move beyond traditional models to embrace democratic, student-centred approaches that enhance learning, wellbeing, and lifelong engagement in physical activity. Her research interests include:
- Student voice, agency, and inclusion in education
- HPE curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment
- Physical Literacy and embodiment
- Equitable physical activity and sport participation
- Transforming HPE through student-centred approaches
- Supporting health and wellbeing in/through physical activity settings
Lisa has expertise in Actor-Network Theory and innovative research methods, including concept analysis and the cartography of controversies, contributing to new ways of examining educational change. Her recent publications focus on physical literacy, embodiment in physical education, and positive narratives in PE, demonstrating a consistent research trajectory examining how to make physical education more inclusive and transformative.
She has been recognized with the 2024 Dean's Award for Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (Early Career Category) and the 2023 Vice-Chancellors Education Excellence Award for community education programs. She was also a finalist for the 2021 Most Outstanding Paper in the Journal of Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education.
Lisa actively supervises research students and welcomes PhD project discussions related to Health and Physical Education, physical literacy, physical activity, inclusion, and student voice and agency. Her community engagement includes work on projects like 'Kids Building Future Healthy - Case Study Research' completed in 2024.
