Lisa P. Nathan serves as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the First Nations Curriculum Concentration at the University of British Columbia's School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (iSchool), situated on the traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam). She leads collaborative projects focused on reimagining information stewardship to address long-term societal challenges including social justice, decolonization, and environmental resilience through transformative information practices.
Her research employs community-based design, ethnography, and participatory methods to develop systems for meaningful engagement with traumatic historical events, exemplified by the Voices from the Rwanda Tribunal project. Key scholarly contributions include:
- Design methods: The Envisioning Cards, Value Scenarios
- Design theory: Values as Hypothesis, Multi-lifespan Information System Design
- Transformative frameworks for social and ecological justice through information technologies
Dr. Nathan collaborates through the Information Practice Research & Design Collective, advancing interdisciplinary work across Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Archival Studies, and Information Science. She has mentored students including current trainee Emily Chan and alumni Rodrigo dos Santos, focusing on ethics, community collaboration, and privacy in information systems.
