Olstein’s research bridges poetry, medical humanities, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her Pain Studies (2020) examines how migraine alters temporal and sensory perception, drawing on sources like House, Joan of Arc trial transcripts, and Woolf’s On Being Ill. She employs fragmented forms such as litanies, collages, and concrete poetry to mirror migraine’s cognitive disruptions.
Her scientific awards include the Pushcart Prize, Lannan Residency, Hayden Carruth Award, Writers League of Texas Discovery Award, and fellowships from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Guggenheim Foundation. She teaches courses like Workshop in Poetry and Literature for Writers, emphasizing sound-driven composition and the symbiotic relationship between teaching and writing.
