Lisa Maurizio is a Professor and Department Chair in the Classical and Medieval Studies Department at Bates College. She holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and M.A./Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her teaching focuses on Greek/Roman languages, literatures, and mythologies, including courses on Senecan tragedy, archaic Greek poetry, and psychoanalytic approaches to myths.
Her research emphasizes Greek religion, particularly Delphic oracles, women’s religious roles, and ritual practices. She co-organized international conferences at Bates (2014 & 2016), with proceedings published by Routledge and De Gruyter. Current projects include an electronic edition of Delphic oracles.
She has produced two plays addressing Greek myths: The Memory of Salt (2004) and Tereus in Fragments (2003). Her interdisciplinary work bridges classical studies with modern artistic interpretation.
