Lisa Mar

Lisa Mar is an Associate Professor at the Department of History, University of Toronto (St. George Campus). She holds cross-appointments in Canadian Studies and University College.

Her research focuses on modern Canadian and U.S. immigration history, particularly Asian Canadian and Asian American experiences. Key themes include Chinese Canadian political agency, multiculturalism, and transnational connections across the Pacific World.

Mar’s seminal work Brokering Belonging examines Chinese Canadian community leaders during the exclusion era (1885-1945), positioning Canada within a Pacific World framework connecting China, the U.S., and the British Empire. Her current projects explore ethnic Chinese Confucianism and comparative histories of Chinese communities in Canada and the U.S. during WWII.
