Lisa Lamb serves as a Professor in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University, with significant affiliation to the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE). Her academic career builds upon prior experience teaching high school mathematics in Virginia and California public schools, providing practical grounding for her scholarly work.
Professor Lamb's research program centers on cognitive development in mathematics education, specifically examining students' conceptual reasoning with integers and the critical skill of 'professional noticing'—how teachers interpret and respond to student mathematical thinking. Her work extends to teacher leadership development through the Master Teaching Fellows initiative, which supports educators in refining pedagogical practices and emerging as instructional leaders.
Recognition for her contributions includes:
- 2019 SDSU Alumni Distinguished Faculty Award
Professor Lamb maintains active research funding through CRMSE-supported projects, including the Integer Reasoning Project and the Noyce Master Teaching Fellows program. These initiatives provide opportunities for graduate students and in-service teachers to engage in cutting-edge research while developing professional expertise. Her work emphasizes practical applications of educational research to improve classroom instruction and student outcomes in mathematics.
As a core member of CRMSE, Professor Lamb contributes to interdisciplinary research teams focused on mathematics and science education, directing projects that investigate foundational learning concepts while developing evidence-based teacher training frameworks.
