Lisa Handwerker, PhD, MPH, is a Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, Geography & Environmental Studies at California State University, East Bay. Her academic background includes a PhD in Medical Anthropology from the joint program of UC San Francisco and Berkeley, and an MPH from UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. She has extensive field research experience in China, focusing on topics such as infertility, reproductive technologies, and gender studies. Her work has been recognized with awards including the Most Notable Edited Collection Book Prize from the Council on Anthropology and Reproduction (2002, 2003).
Handwerker’s research interests span medical anthropology, public health policy, and cross-cultural health practices. She has conducted ethnographic studies in China, Mexico, and Russia, emphasizing issues like healthcare access, reproductive rights, and community health initiatives. Her teaching spans online and in-person courses in medical anthropology, conflict mediation, and qualitative research methods.
She has held adjunct roles at institutions including UC Santa Cruz and the California College of Arts. Community engagement includes roles on school governance boards, homelessness advocacy, and ethics committees. Handwerker’s multilingual abilities (Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic) and certifications in mediation and public health further enhance her interdisciplinary work.
