Lisa Blackman

Professor Lisa Blackman is a leading scholar in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, specializing in body studies, affect theory, and mental health research. She holds a Professorship in the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies (MCCS) and has been a Co-Head of Department (2016–2019). Her work bridges media psychology, cultural theory, and critical neuroscience, with a focus on embodiment, voice-hearing, and post-truth communication.

Research Interests: Lisa’s current projects explore affect and contagion in social media, critical neuroscience, and the intersection of mental health activism with academia. She co-leads an Australian Research Council project on Borderline Personality Disorder and is editing the journal Body & Society. Her recent book Haunted Data (2019) investigates transmedia storytelling and affectivity, while her forthcoming Grey Media (2025) addresses AI deception and gaslighting in post-truth contexts.

Key Contributions: Pioneered work in the Hearing Voices Movement, co-edited Mass Hysteria: Critical Psychology and Media Studies (2001), and developed the undergraduate module Embodiment and Experience. She is a Co-Director of the Centre for Feminist Research and led a British Academy project on university sexual misconduct cultures.

Teaching: Co-convenes the MA Media and Communications and teaches transdisciplinary body studies. Her second edition of The Body: The Key Concepts (2021) is a foundational text in the field.

Grants & Collaborations: Involved in interdisciplinary projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, Australian Research Council, and British Academy. Collaborates with researchers on topics ranging from mental health activism to AI ethics.
