Lisa Bitel is the Dean's Professor of Religion and Professor of History at the University of Southern California. A first-generation college student, she earned degrees from Smith College, Harvard University, and University College Dublin, specializing in medieval European history, religious studies, and gender history. Her research spans Celtic cultures, visual religion, and the supernatural in pre-modern Europe.

Dr. Bitel has authored four books on medieval religion and gender, including Otherworld: Nine Tales of Wonder and Romance from Medieval Ireland (Oxford University Press, 2024), and Landscape with Two Saints (Oxford University Press, 2009). Her work bridges academic scholarship with public engagement through digital humanities projects like the Monastic Matrix database.
Among her honors: Elected Fellow, Medieval Academy of America (2016); Guggenheim Fellowship (1998-1999); multiple NEH and ACLS fellowships. She served as Director of Women’s Studies at the University of Kansas and currently contributes to the Center for the Premodern World and the USC Society of Fellows in the Humanities.
