Lisa Balabanlilar holds the Joseph and Joanna Nazro Mullen Professorship in the Humanities at Rice University. She serves as Chair of the Department of Transnational Asian Studies, Professor in both the Department of History and Department of Transnational Asian Studies, and Director of the Chao Center for Asian Studies. Her research focuses on the Timurid-Mughal Empire, comparative imperial court culture, and early modern Islamic empires. She has published extensively on Mughal identity, imperial governance, and elite pleasure gardens.
- Education: PhD (2007) and MA (Ohio State University), BA (Portland State University)
Her research interests span Islamic South and Central Asia, with particular attention to imperial court dynamics, movement/procussions, and memory/identity. Current projects include a global comparative study of imperial pleasure gardens titled The King's Garden. Her recent publications include The Emperor Jahangir: Power and Kingship in Mughal India (2020) and Imperial Identity in the Mughal Empire (2012).

Award-winning educator, she has received multiple teaching honors: Brown Award for Superior Teaching (2018, 2016, 2014) and Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Excellence Prize (2010). Teaches courses on South Asian history, Mongol Empire, and comparative early modern Islamic empires.
