Prof. Lisa A Cuchara is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Quinnipiac University, where she has held this position since 2011. Previously, she served as Associate Professor (2006-2011) and held roles at Yale University School of Medicine including Associate Director and Lab Manager of the Histocompatibility & Immune Evaluation Lab (1996-2006). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Cancer Institute (1996-2000) and earned degrees from SUNY College New Paltz (BS), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS), and Albany Medical College (MS/PhD).
Her research focuses on antibiotic resistance, vaccine preventable diseases, and transmission dynamics of infectious pathogens. Techniques include bacterial culturing, PCR analysis, and molecular diagnostics. Over 160 undergraduate and graduate students have participated in her projects, presenting findings at national conferences like ASM Microbe and Sigma Xi. Notable projects include studies on toothbrush contamination, MRSA resistance mechanisms, and vaccine hesitancy interventions.
Teaching philosophy emphasizes fostering curiosity and critical thinking through active learning. Current courses include Public Health Epidemiology, Immunology, and Biomedical Sciences Internships. She actively collaborates with students on community health initiatives, such as campus vaccination education programs and public health surveys.
Recent research highlights include 2024 presentations on college student-driven vaccination outreach and vaccine perception studies, demonstrating innovative approaches to addressing public health challenges through student engagement.
