Professor Lionel Naccache is co-head of the PICNIC-Neuropsychology and Functional Neuroimaging team at the Brain Institute. His research focuses on the cerebral bases of consciousness, unconscious processes, and neurological assessments. He developed EEG-based tests for evaluating non-communicating patients’ consciousness levels and created an algorithm for EEG-based consciousness classification. He founded the first level-of-consciousness assessment center at APHP, trained specialized teams, and pioneered transcranial electrical stimulation therapies for consciousness disorders. His work integrates clinical neurology, cognitive science, and medical technology.
- Awards: 2021 Eloi Collery Prize (Academy of Medicine), Grand Prix Claude Bernard (City of Paris)
- Research Themes: Consciousness neuroscience, EEG diagnostics, neurorehabilitation
- Innovations: EEG-based consciousness probing, algorithmic state classification, transcranial stimulation therapies
His career has advanced translational neurology, bridging clinical practice and cognitive neuroscience. Current work emphasizes refining consciousness assessment protocols and expanding therapeutic applications for vegetative state patients.
