Lionel Jackson serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University, maintaining this academic position continuously since 1987. Although retired from the Geological Survey of Canada, he remains an active contributor to geological research and academic instruction at SFU.
His research expertise centers on Quaternary stratigraphy and debris flow hazards, where he is recognized as a leading authority on surficial geology in Alberta and Yukon territories. Dr. Jackson pioneered methodologies for debris flow hazard evaluation in the Canadian Cordillera and has conducted extensive international field investigations across western Canada, California, and South America (Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina). His work includes tsunami impact assessments from the 2004 Indian Ocean event in Seychelles, landslide-induced-tsunami hazards in British Columbia's coastal fjords, and urban geology studies of the Vancouver region. Current research focuses on stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analysis of drilling cores from the Evergreen Line tunnel construction project near Burnaby and Port Moody.
With a multidisciplinary career spanning petroleum geology in Canada's oil industry, hydrology with the US Geological Survey, and research science at the Geological Survey of Canada, Dr. Jackson brings exceptional practical experience to his academic role. As an Adjunct Professor, he mentors students and contributes to the Department of Earth Sciences' research initiatives, particularly in natural hazard assessment and Quaternary geological analysis across diverse global contexts.
