Ling Richard is the Shaw Foundation Professor of Media Technology at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2014–present). Previously, he held the rank of Professor at the IT University of Copenhagen (2009–2014) and has extensive industry experience with Telenor Research and Telenor R&D since 1993. He earned a B.A. (1976) and Ph.D. (1984) in Sociology from the University of Colorado. His research focuses on technology-society interactions, qualitative methodologies, and mobile communication’s impact on social dynamics and news consumption.
Richard has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the International Communication Association Fellow and the Erving Goffman Award. His book New Tech, New Ties received multiple nominations, including an honorable mention for the PROSE Award. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication and co-founded journals like Mobile Media and Communication. With over 13,740 citations and an H-index of 49, his work significantly influences mobile communication studies.
Richard’s academic and industry collaborations span decades, including roles as Adjunct Researcher at the University of Michigan and Visiting Researcher at the Institute for Social Research. His editorial leadership and prolific publishing (e.g., The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society, 2020) underscore his global influence in media and technology research.
