Lindy Backues is an Adjunct Professor in Global Studies and Mission at Eastern University's Department of Social Transformation within the College of Health and Sciences. His work bridges theology, community development, and participatory实践, rooted in decades of field experience in Indonesia.
Dr. Backues spent 18 years in Indonesia (1989–2007), founding a multi-faith community empowerment NGO and leading tsunami response efforts in Aceh Jaya. He served as Indonesia Country Director for Millennium Relief & Development Services. His teaching focuses on integrating faith with justice, including courses like 'Faith and Economic Justice' and 'Theology of Poverty.'
Research Interests:
- Interfaith dialogue and practical theology
- Christian faith’s intersection with political economy
- Economic development in global South contexts
- Anthropological methodologies for faith-based community work
Recent Collaborative Work: Co-authored “Engaging the Religiously Committed Other” in Current Anthropology with MATCA faculty team. Currently co-authoring a book on interfaith dialogue with an Indonesian Muslim scholar and another on Christian faith and political economy.
Philosophy: Advocates for holistic integration of faith, justice, and global perspectives as core to Eastern University’s mission. Emphasizes bridging divides between faith traditions, socioeconomic contexts, and geographic regions.
