Lindsey Root Luna is a Professor and Dean of Social Sciences at Hope College, holding a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, and Clinical Psychology, while advising the Psychology Club and Psi Chi, Hope’s chapter of the international honors society.
- Education: Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami (2012), B.A. in Psychology from Hope College (2003).
Her research focuses on the intersection of emotion regulation and virtues like forgiveness, gratitude, humility, and hope. She investigates how these virtues influence physiological functioning, particularly heart rate variability (a measure of parasympathetic nervous system control), and their role in mental health and flourishing. She also explores effective pedagogy, including the impact of flipped classrooms in psychology education.
Her publications span topics from forgiveness-seeking behaviors to the psychophysiological effects of retributive justice, with recent articles in journals like Emotion and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Her work is supported by grants such as the John Templeton Foundation’s Behavioral Measure of Humility in Couples.

Lindsey maintains a private practice in Grand Rapids, collaborates extensively with faculty and students, and is actively involved in her church. She values relationships and enjoys cooking, music, and nature.
