Dr. Lindsay Shuller-Nickles is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University. Her research focuses on environmental mineralogy, actinide chemistry, and computational materials science, with an emphasis on nuclear waste management and nuclear forensics. She holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan (2010, 2007, 2005).
Her work integrates experimental and computational methods to evaluate nuclear materials stability and waste streams. Current funded projects include a Department of Homeland Security grant for nuclear forensics and a Nuclear Regulatory Commission scholarship program. Key research areas include hollandite-based ceramics for cesium immobilization and radionuclide retention mechanisms.
- Education:
- Ph.D. Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, 2010
- M.S. Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, 2007
- B.S. Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, 2005
Research Interests: Her studies address nuclear fuel cycle waste management, geochemical interactions of actinides, and material durability under radiation. Recent efforts involve developing predictive models for geologic corrosion and characterizing materials for nuclear forensics.
Awards:
- First Place in Innovations in Fuel Cycle Research (2010)
- Best Poster at Waste Management Conference (2008)
- Office of Civilian and Radioactive Waste Management Fellowship (2007-2010)
- Roy G Post Scholarship (2007)
Advising & Grants: As PI for the Nuclear Forensics Junior Faculty Award and NRC scholarship program, she supports undergraduate education and nuclear engineering initiatives. Her research is further bolstered by collaborations in material synthesis and computational modeling.
Labs/Teams: Her research group focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to nuclear materials science, with active participation in DOE and DHS-funded projects.
