Lindsay Ivey Burden is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia. She serves as Director of the Center for Transportation Studies and is affiliated with the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Sustainability University Transportation Center (MATS UTC), which was designated a Beyond Traffic Innovation Center by the Department of Transportation in 2017. Her professional memberships include ASCE GeoInstitute, Transportation Research Board (TRB), and Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
- B.S. Civil Engineering, University of Louisville (2005)
- M.S. Civil Engineering, University of Louisville (2006)
- Ph.D. Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology (2012)
Her research focuses on geotechnical engineering applications in infrastructure systems, particularly in transportation contexts. Key areas include:
- Seismic resilience of ports and critical infrastructure
- Sinkhole susceptibility mapping for roadways
- Trenchless construction technologies
- Risk analysis and decision modeling
- Geophysical soil testing
- Sustainable transportation systems
Her publications demonstrate expertise in geotechnical risk modeling, infrastructure resilience, and transportation sustainability. Notable accomplishments include receiving the Civil Engineering Teaching Award (2014) and Thomas E. Hutchinson Award (2016).
